Thoroughbred Racing Trainer

Marty Wolfson

Marty Wolfson knew at an early age that he wanted to become a thoroughbred racing trainer. Son of successful businessman and thoroughbred owner, Lou Wolfson (Affirmed and Harbor View Farm), Marty loved the daily rhythm of life at the track. However, his amazing track record as an equine turn-around artist is due to more than mere luck and hard work.

His phenomenal horsemanship skills and knack for making winners is the product of a unique combination of knowledge. Marty’s days as a young bodybuilder laid the foundation for understanding the role that nutrition, supplements and training play in building and maintaining a strong, healthy athlete. In addition, he is no stranger to the demands of physical rehabilitation. In 1999, his wife, Karla, suffered a kick by a horse called Mr. Angel; it left her life hanging in balance. After a long rehabilitation period, she now stands by his side as assistant trainer, and is seen frequently in the winner’s circle.

This unique combination of life experiences allows Marty to intuitively manage a horse to perform at its peak. His numerous successful turn-arounds are sometimes the result of very simple adjustments to routine care or basic horse management. From changing shoes to changing the horse’s running style. From magnetic blankets to Epsom salts and never over-training. Marty’s approach has paid off in recent years with incredible win statistics.

Based out of Calder Race Course in Florida, he is among the top 10 all-time leading trainers and was inducted in Calder’s Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2008, he won with 30% of his starters. Thus far in 2009, he has won with 24% of his starters, and has been in the money with 55%.

At 57 years old, Marty Wolfson has many more years to impact thoroughbred racing. And we’ll enjoy watching the results of one of racing’s great trainers.
