Woodlands Classic Stakes goes to Tenzing
The underrated Tenzing took a step closer towards a successful title defence of the Fortune Bowl when he landed the $150,000 Group 3 Woodlands Classic Stakes (1800m) in thrilling fashion on Sunday.
The Catbird six-year-old prepared by Cliff Brown is now right on track for the traditional Chinese New Year feature on February 11, a Group 3 race over 2000m (turf) which he nailed in the very last stride from Mitre Peak last year.
Ridden by in-form jockey John Powell, Tenzing ($72) formed part of a trio of swoopers who gobbled up runaway leader City Lad (Tengku Rehaizat) as he started to knock up at the 250m. Lizarre (Davy Bonilla) and Nandowra (Joao Moreira) were fighting out the finish, but Tenzing finished a shade better to score by three parts of a length from Lizarre, with second favourite Nandowra third another two lengths away.
The winning time was 1min 50.03secs.

Ato adds another trophy to the cabinet
Owners Dennis and Gael Evans have been making a habit of winning feature races in Singapore and they added to their growing trophy cabinet when Ato took out the Group 3 $200,000 Saas Fee Stakes over 1400m on Sunday.
Just a week ago Flax, carrying the Newbury Racing Stable colours, took out the Group 1 Raffles Cup over 1800m, while Ato has also taken this year the International Group 1 KrisFlyer International Sprint as well at the Group 1 Patron’s Bowl.
Ridden by Barend Vorster, Ato, the $8 favourite, scored a commanding one-and-a-quarter length victory from King Empire (Joao Moreira) with Excavator (Jose Verenzuela) a neck away third.
The winning time was 1 min 21.96 secs.

Ato goes from strength to strength…
Singapore Group 1 Patron’s Bowl over 1600m fell to a strongly finishing Ato who backed up his Krisflyer Sprint victory with a step up in trip.
The second leg of 4-year-old challenge looked like a straight match-up between the winner of international Group 1 Krisflyer Sprint winner, Ato and the winner of the 1st leg of the Singapore 4-year-old challenge, the Singapore Group 2 Stewards’ Cup, Gingerbread Man. The two could not have been more of a contrast to each other in the parade ring with Ato walking around like a pugilist and Gingerbread Man almost sleepy in his calmness…

Lockdown Bounces Back in Winning Form
With regular partner Barend Vorster sidelined through suspension, jockey Robbie Fradd did not pass up the opportunity to put his skills to good use aboard Lockdown for old boss Patrick Shaw on Sunday.
Lined up in the $55,000 Class 4 Division 2 race (1200m) on Polytrack, the Jeune six-year-old franked his recent good form (two seconds over the same trip and surface from his last two runs) to hit the line first courtesy of a 10-out-of-10 ride from Fradd.
One of the best away in the 12-horse field, Lockdown was able to take the lead fairly easily before steadying up the speed from the 800m. Drunken Speed (Saifudin Ismail) was in close attendance in second with Gut Feel (Leong Yoon Fei) joining in three wide.

Turning for home South Easter had the race in his control and drew clear to record a three-and-a-half length victory over Saddlers Creek (Olivier Placais) with Chief Secretary (Ronnie Stewart) a head away third.

Jamal Malik stamps himself as Derby prospect
Trainer Patrick Shaw may be enjoying a well-earned break back in his native South Africa, especially after Rocket Man’s recent creditable campaign in Hong Kong, but the team back in Singapore is still keeping the home fires burning after they saddled the ever-consistent Jamal Malik to another win on Friday night.
The Argentinian-bred boasted a handy record of four wins and two seconds from 10 starts, but all registered on grass while his latest outing (only his second) on Polytrack at his last run saw him finish sixth to stablemate Escamonda in the Group 3 Proinn Construct Stakes (1700m) on December 3.
