Ken and Karen Breckon might have experienced a harness racing victory with their brilliant trotter I Can Doosit earlier in the evening, but when Twist And Twirl won the $125,000 Northern Oaks for 3yo fillies it was a moment they will never forget.
Not only did their champion filly set a New Zealand age group record in the coveted Group One event – but it was a race the Breckons dearly wanted to win after their beloved Magaera was beaten into third when favourite in the 1997 edition of the race… Read more>>

Don’t discount Auckland Reactor says Butt
Harnesslink Admin| 12:28 PM| 21-Feb-2012 NZT
The $1 million final of the V75 interdominion pacing championship is definitely not simply a contest between champions Im Themightyquinn and Smoken Up, according to star New Zealand harness racing reins man Anthony Butt.

“They don’t give these finals away and it’s not a two-horse race by any means,” Butt said after driving New Zealand superstar Auckland Reactor to a convincing victory in the sixth heat of the series at Gloucester Park on Monday night.

Auckland Reactor was the fastest of the four heat winners on the second night of the carnival and after the first eight heats the brilliant seven-year-old, Im Themightyquinn and Smoken Up are the only undefeated pacers in the series…Read more>>

It’s a disadvantage not to wear the ‘Flair’

Posted on Wednesday, January 4th, 2012 at 8:39 pm.

09:47 AM 04-Jan-2012 NZT

More and more harness racing trainers are realising the added advantage that ‘Flair Nasal Strips’ give their horses. You only have to look at the piles of evidence to prove the fact. Director of Flair Equine Nasal Strips, Brain McMath of Franklin in South Auckland, said six winners wore the strips at Alexandra Park on Saturday.

They were Group One winners I Can Doosit, Twist And Twirl, Listed winner Ideal Scott as well as Dancing Diamonds, Your Good Fortune and Minnie Moose.

To cap off a great day La Passione won the last New Zealand of 2011 when easily at Rangiora.

McMath said there had been many highlights in 2011 – both trotting and galloping… Read more>>

Locals rule in Counties Cup

Posted on Sunday, November 27th, 2011 at 3:33 pm.

The locals reigned supreme today when the Pukekohe-owned and trained Postman’s Daughter won the Gr. 2 DHL Counties Cup in the hands of Pukekohe jockey Danielle Johnson.

Postman’s Daughter is trained on the course by her owner-breeder Don Walker, who described the four-year-old, the only horse he has in work, as “not bad to get out of bed for.” Read More>>

FEI PRESS RELEASE
Lausanne (SUI), 19 August 2011

NEW ZEALAND’S JOHNSTONE HAS ONE LAST PUSH IN FEI WORLD CUP™ EVENTING

Antipodean riders Clarke Johnstone (NZL) and Chris Burton (AUS) are making absolutely sure of their FEI World Cup™ Eventing bonus by traveling to the last event in the 2011 series, which is underway at Haras du Pin (FRA) today.

Both riders are now based in Britain, where they are making quite an impact on the national circuit.

They will be hard to beat in the race to secure the FEI World Cup™ Eventing 2011 champion title and for Clarke Johnstone this would be a sweet victory after his brilliant wins at the first and second legs at Kihikihi (NZL) and Sydney (AUS).

A strong field of 47 riders representing 12 nations will contest this popular event, including several leading French names and Olympians such as Mark Todd (NZL) and Clayton Fredericks (AUS), so the Antipodean influence is expected to be strong.

Emily Baldwin, who scored a one-two-three on Drivetime at FEI World Cup™ Eventing’s third leg at Chatsworth (GBR), and was last year’s Le Pin winner, had signalled that she would be returning to the final leg of the 2011 series in her quest for further points. She will be missed after suffering a broken collarbone at Gatcombe.

A full report on Haras du Pin and the final standings in the FEI World Cup™ Eventing 2011 will be published after the event.

Symphony in Motion slays them in $50k Pace

Harnesslink News Room 09:31 PM 17-Jun-2011 NZT

He considered it but Ardmore’s master harness racing trainer and driver Tony Herlihy has resisted sending Symphony In Motion across the Tasman to take on Australia’s best 2-year-olds. Instead the Northern Hemisphere timed colt will now be spelled and be brought back for the 3-year-old Sales Series races around Christmas time.

As was the case in last week’s Prelude, Symphony In Motion simply ran his opposition off their feet in tonight’s $50,000 Listed PGG Wrightson Yearling Sales Series Northern Hemisphere Timed Pace at Alexandra Park.

Herlihy had the $1.30 favourite in front shortly after the start of the 2200m, and from that point the race was for second. He won in 2:47.48 – the exact same time they stopped the clock in seven days ago at the same venue.…  Read More >>
